Today is my first day of my bare-faced challenge!!!

I was conspiring with my boyfriend about the possibility of not putting ANYTHING on my face for one month...and documenting it. And I was so excited the next day that I did it!

My rules:

No face soap

No toner

No commercial moisturizer

No make-up (face make-up)

...all for one month!

Exceptions:

I can use all the eye and lip make-up I want, because it's not going directly on the areas where I off and on break out. For the most part, this means just my favorite lip balm and mascara, or eyeliner and a bit of shadow and lip color. I allowed myself this to help enhance my favorite features if I feel insecure about no make-up for whatever reason.

If and when my skin gets dry and for make-up remover, I can use jojoba oil and/or olive oil.

I'm allowed a few instances where I can wear make-up, but not all day. (if my skin is breaking out really bad and I have a job interview, for example)

Life is interesting right now. I did massive emotional [early] spring cleaning after someone very close to me hurt me bad again. There is no reason not to be treated with love by people who say they love you. Anyway, life's events and emotions come quickly in swells now, and I feel as if I'm growing up exponentially, and fighting it a little. The newfound responsibility stings slightly and I turn to my age-old ice-packs of food, The Office, daydreaming and other pleasures.

Well, when a door closes, a new one opens, and in my case a very large door closed (not my doing) and many opened. I have a difficult time taking the trivialities of corporate America seriously when my heart swells with passion, lust and activism. In my mind, I am a superheroin in leather leggings and knee-high boots, saving unsuspecting strangers (future friends) from the doldrums of work and life. Maybe I need to grow up...hah, no, never.

Fashion rant:

I'm glad Coachella is over so people can stop reporting on "Coachella fashion"...girls wearing the same thing Kate Moss wore 5 years ago and girls wearing Native American headdresses. SHOOT ME.

I started f0llowing a bunch of fashion blogs on Bloglovin', but the lookbook.nu style of playing dress-up and taking 80 photos of yourself making the same pouty, lifeless face is sooooooo old already. Bloggers with UNIQUE personal style include Karla of Karla's Closet and Caroline from The Fashion Squad to name a couple. Also, those girls SMILE when they get their picture taken...not give a dead corpse blank face. SO LAME. A pout here and a blank stare there is totally fine in an editorial but not when it's continuous... I still love Facehunter, the Sartorialist and Garace Dore though!

I really need a fashion refresher...luckily I'm working for a denim company now and I'm getting really inspired! It will be great to have a regular shopping budget again! Also, I've been less critical of myself lately, and much more brave. Yes!!

Lookbook: a rant

Why are fashion blogs featuring photos of the blogger posing in variations of the same outfit popular?

The usually waifish blogger stares with lifeless eyes at her self-timed digital camera, hoping to capture a throng of style-crazed girls who might think she's pretty and trendy. This is lifeless. I have no desire to see trendy garb under a leather jacket in seven photos with no change in pose besides the model's angle of her vacant tilt often seen in Urban Outfitters catalogues. She looks so hopelessly into the camera it's difficult to guess what she is thinking. She certainly doesn't tell you. Her blog's only text includes a lone gesture to an image citation once and a while and a vague paragraph outlining her scores during a recent shopping spree.

Perhaps this phenomenon is a type of fashion expression, just as the phenomenon of someone with "no style" is and also those who love what they love and wear what they want according to that. I applaud the last phenomenon, because it describes girls who have truly become women.

The last half of this month has been exhausting, dramatic and not very fun at all. It hit me like a bag of books that I HATE academic writing. It's so goddamn boring, and good for one thing: facts. I do not enjoy research papers (the only kind of research I could do is ethnographic, I'm sure...it allows creativity). I have the job interview of my college dreams tomorrow and a potential amazing internship with one of my favorite non-profits. The point is...I dislike most Januarys, but the natural signs of spring are here, good things are happening, I'm really really smitten and my dad is making fish and chips. PS: Don't forget to donate time and money to Haiti!

HAPPINESS

For me, happiness is the freedom to do what you enjoy, the freedom from that which brings you down and lowers you in any (negative rather than humbling) way, and the act of being surprised.

During a difficult part of my life a couple years ago, I struggled to understand the minute details of life and relationships and was left hanging and tangled in them. Trust me, this was a point of unhappiness for me.

One day, it stopped being painful. I stopped caring so much over these details. When I look back, it wasn't actually a sudden process, but a gradual one involving me getting involved. I got a fabulous job, volunteered, helped organize every possible school event, explored the country by myself and started helping animals. Boredom is the hobgoblin of the mind...never let yourself be bored and may you be on the road to happiness.

It's overcast...after a long stretch of unusually sunny, calm December days, so finally finding these soft, springtime pictures from the Genetic spring/summer 2010 lookbook makes me so happy. I would turn tricks for Genetic, nearly...I got a pair from the Resort collection for my birthday and I cannot take them off.
